This comforting and flavorful Wonton Egg Drop Soup is a perfect fusion of two classic Chinese soups—silky egg drop soup and savory wonton soup. Filled with delicate homemade wontons and a velvety egg ribbon broth, this dish is easy to prepare and makes a great addition to your takeout-inspired meal night. Ready in just 35 minutes, it’s a warm and satisfying bowl of goodness!

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • ½ pound ground pork
  • ¼ cup finely chopped green onions
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2024 wonton wrappers
  • 1 tablespoon water (for sealing the wontons)

For the Broth:

  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil

For the Egg Drop:

  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water

Optional Garnishes:

  • Chopped green onions
  • A drizzle of sesame oil
  • Crispy wonton strips

Instructions

 Prepare the Wonton Filling:

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground pork, green onions, grated ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Stir until well combined.

2. Assemble the Wontons:

  1. Place a small amount of filling (about 1 teaspoon) in the center of a wonton wrapper.
  2. Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
  3. Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing the edges to seal. Bring the two opposite corners together and seal with a dab of water. Repeat with remaining wrappers.

3. Make the Broth:

  1. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  2. Add soy sauce, ground ginger, salt, white pepper, and sesame oil. Stir well.

4. Cook the Wontons:

  1. Carefully drop the wontons into the simmering broth and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until they float to the surface.

5. Create the Egg Ribbons:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water. Add this mixture to the beaten eggs.
  2. Slowly pour the eggs into the simmering broth while gently stirring in one direction to create silky egg ribbons.

6. Final Touches and Serving:

  1. Let the soup cook for another minute, then turn off the heat.
  2. Ladle into bowls and garnish with chopped green onions and a drizzle of sesame oil. Serve hot!

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding shiitake mushrooms or bok choy to the broth.
  • You can use ground chicken or shrimp as an alternative to pork.
  • If you like a thicker broth, add an extra teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with water before adding the eggs.
  • Serve with a side of soy sauce and chili oil for dipping extra wontons!
