With just 15 minutes of prep time, this easy bread pudding recipe will become a family favorite. Serve it warm with whipped cream, fresh fruit, or a drizzle of caramel for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 45 cups (about 6 slices) stale bread, cubed (brioche, challah, or French bread work best)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ½ cup raisins, pecans, or chocolate chips (optional)

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for thickening, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread Base

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Cut stale bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the bread cubes evenly.

Step 2: Make the Custard

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak all the pieces.
  3. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb the custard fully.

Step 3: Bake the Bread Pudding

  1. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  2. Let the bread pudding cool slightly while making the vanilla sauce.

Step 4: Make the Vanilla Sauce

  1. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the sugar and heavy cream, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract and cornstarch (if using), then cook for another 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding before serving.
  2. Top with whipped cream, fresh berries, or caramel drizzle for an extra indulgent touch.

Notes

Use Day-Old Bread – Slightly stale bread soaks up the custard better, giving a creamy texture.
Let the Bread Soak – Allow at least 10-15 minutes before baking to absorb the flavors.
Prevent Dryness – Cover with foil if the pudding starts to brown too quickly.
For a Boozy Twist – Add 1 tablespoon of rum or bourbon to the vanilla sauce.
Make It Dairy-Free – Use almond milk and dairy-free butter.
